Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance

Careers education at The Milestone School, referred to as ‘My Future’, is a fully embedded element of the curriculum, with careers learning thoughtfully interwoven through all subjects to provide real-life context and relevance. The school delivers an inclusive and accessible programme tailored to the diverse needs of all pupils across the SEND spectrum, ensuring every learner can engage in careers activities appropriate to their individual development. A full-time, highly experienced Careers Advisor supports the provision, offering expert guidance in Careers Information, Advice and Guidance (CIAG) and coordinating a wide range of enriching opportunities. These include extensive work experience placements, both internal and external, alongside mock interviews with internal staff and external professionals, careers trips, and employer encounters. This comprehensive approach ensures that every pupil is equipped with the skills, confidence, and insight needed to take their next steps and thrive in their future pathways.
Our curriculum is carefully adapted across our four phases, Engage, Explore, Enquire, and Empower, to ensure that every pupil accesses meaningful opportunities suited to their stage of development. Pupils in our Engage and Explore phases often require highly individualised support and may not engage in “careers” in the traditional sense. However, careers education in this context focuses on developing personal agency, independence, and meaningful engagement in adult life. The outcomes are therefore tailored to maximise quality of life, self-determination, and community participation. Within Engage and Explore, a thematic approach is used to introduce concepts of work and independence through creative, sensory, and play-based experiences that make learning purposeful and relevant. In the Enquire phase, pupils begin to broaden their awareness of the wider world, explore personal interests, and make supported choices about future possibilities, with an emphasis on developing transferable skills. Finally, in the Empower phase, learning becomes increasingly applied and outward-facing, with themes providing real-life contexts for developing employability, accessing work experience, and preparing for adulthood with confidence and independence. This phased structure ensures that every pupil, regardless of need, is given a clear pathway to achieve meaningful outcomes and to play an active role in their community.

The school will measure the quality of careers education available against the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks and will continue to use the Compass self-assessment tool to indicate areas for further development.
The impact for pupils will be in the key transition points with the aim to support social mobility by enabling pupils to progress to further studies and employment.
